Thornton's History
The Thornton name has roots in the Ellenville area from the early 19th Century when Earl Thornton II’s great, great grandfather settled into the Spring Glen area. Earl Thornton Sr. started his electrical business after serving his country in the U.S. Navy.Along with his uncle, Earl Tice, they began providing electrical service to the area under the name T&T Electric until 1963 at which time the business came to be known as Thornton Electric.Earl Thornton Sr. had a thriving business in the area, expanding many times over as the Ellenville area demanded more and more of his services.

Earl Thornton II began working part time for his father after graduating from high school in 1971.After some college studies Earl decided to work for his dad full time. His wife, Karen, also joined the business, working along with Earl’s mother, Peggy, in the office as a bookkeeper.

Thorntons has been a respected and trusted name in the electric business in the Ellenville area for over 45 years. In 1973 Thorntons also became the primary plumbing and heating company in the area when it filled the gap Rose and Douglas Hardware and Plumbing left when it closed its doors after more than 100 years in business. Two of their highly respected professionals, Bill Green and Donald McKenny, helped Thorntons to continue the tradition of quality and integrity many people enjoyed with Rose and Douglas.

In 1995 Earl Thornton Sr. retired from the business and Earl Thornton Jr. became the sole owner and operator of Thornton Electric, Plumbing and Heating. Needing to expand, Earl Jr. located a piece of property owned by Deyo Lumber for more than 200 years.Deyo Lumber was closing its’ doors at the right time for Earl Jr. to expand his business and in 1995 Thornton Electric moved its home from Route 209 to 216 Canal Street in Ellenville.

In 1996, with a desire to service the hardware needs of local customers, Earl began to explore the possibility of opening a hardware store. They all desire to exceed customer expectations where possible, providing excellence, value and the proper product mix.

In 2003 Thornton Hardware opened a Radio Shack franchise to fill the need left when another local franchise closed. Located inside Thornton Hardware, Radio Shack offers wireless services, HDTVs and DVD players, audio components, PC and networking gear, Sirius Satellite Radio® and much more.

Thornton’s philosophy is the same today as it was over 45 years ago – to provide our customers with quality merchandise and the personal and professional service they expect and deserve. Stop by today and see why so many customers keep coming back to Thorntons.
